Raspberry Pi Accessories Shopping Guide

By: Edgar Pisani

Depending on what you want to do with your Raspberry Pi, you will need to buy a few extra parts to make the Raspberry Pi work. The minimum parts you will need are a Raspberry Pi, a memory card and a power supply or power adaptor. To set it up, you will need a USB keyboard, a USB mouse and a monitor. If you need to connect it to the Internet or your local network, you will need a network cable or a USB Wi-Fi adapter. Some of them you might already have floating around, i.e. from an old mobile phone. The rest of the parts you might need will be related to what would you use your Raspberry Pi for: i.e. a media centre, a home server, a game console and so on.

Raspberry Pi, Memory Card and Power Adapter

To start or boot a Raspberry Pi, besides the Raspberry Pi, you require a memory card with preloaded software distribution and a power adapter.

NOOBS is by far the easiest distribution to install. NOOBS stands for New Out of The Box Software. It allows you to select a range of operating systems, including Rasbian and media centre Kodi based ones like OpenElec.

The following kit provides those components:

Raspberry Pi Noobs Kit - Minimal

Kit includes: Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, Noobs 8GB micro SD card with Adapter, USB power adapter - 5V 2A  and USB type A to micro B 1m cable.

Keyboard & Mouse

A USB keyboard will allow you enter commands in the command prompt, something like the system command in Windows, but if you want to use your Raspberry Pi in graphics mode you will also need a USB mouse.

You can also use some of the wireless mini keyboards like these ones:

Wireless Keyboard + Wireless Mouse + Learning TV Remote

The perfect media centre remote control. It combines a wireless keyboard, a wireless mouse and a learning infrared remote control. The wireless keyboard and mouse use a 2.4GHz USB dongle. The learning infrared allows the remote control to learn the commands from your existing infrared TV / Amplifier / DVD Player / Blue Ray Player remote controls. Simplify your life with a single remote control.

Miniature Wireless USB Keyboard and Touchpad

Add a miniature wireless controller to your computer project with this combination keyboard and touchpad. We found the smallest wireless USB keyboard available, a mere 152mm x 59mm x 12.5mm! It's small but usable to make a great accompaniment to a computer or Raspberry Pi. The keyboard itself is battery powered. The keyboard communicates back to the computer via 2.4 GHz wireless link (not Bluetooth).

Monitor

To be able to see what the Raspberry Pi "is doing" you need to connect it to a monitor.

You can connect the Raspberry Pi to monitors that have a HDMI input, a DVI-D input or a composite input. Identifying which one you have will help you get the right cable to connect the Raspberry Pi to the monitor.

The following image displays what the connectors look like:

Example of DVI-D, HDMI and Composite monitor input connections

If you have a HDMI monitor, then you should get a cable like this:

HDMI High Speed Cable 2m - Black
  • Connector Type A: HDMI Plug (Male)
  • Connector Type B: HDMI Plug (Male)
  • Cable Length: 2m
$4.50 In stock.

If your monitor has a DVI-D connector, you'll need a cable like this:

HDMI to DVI-D Cable 3m
  • Connector Type A: HDMI Plug (Male)
  • Connector Type B: DVI-D Plug (Male)
  • Jacket Colour: Black
  • Cable Length: 3m
  • Connector A Contact Plating: Gold
  • Connector B Contact Plating: Gold

If your monitor has a Composite video connector and you have a Raspberry Pi Model B+ you'll need a 4 pole 3.5mm audio/video cable. The yellow connector provides video, the red and white connectors, provide audio. See cable below:

4 Pole 3.5mm Cable for the Raspberry Pi Model B+

If your monitor only has a VGA Connector, the only way to connect it to the Raspberry Pi is through a HDMI to VGA convertor box.

Network Connections

If you need to connect your Raspberry Pi Model B or Raspberry Pi Model B+ to the Internet or your home network, you can use an Ethernet cable like this one:

Network Cable RJ45 Cat 5E 2m - Black
  • Network Cable CAT 5E, 2m Black
  • Connector Type A: RJ45 Plug
  • Connector Type B: RJ45 Plug
  • Cable Length: 2m
  • Conductor Size: 24AWG
$5.00 In stock.

If your Raspberry Pi is far away from your Router and you have a wireless router, you could connect your Raspberry Pi to the network using a USB Wi-Fi adapter, like this one:

Analog Audio

Even though the HDMI connection provides digital audio, there could be some cases where you would like to use the analog audio at the same time as the digital one. For example, you can use the Pandora plugin in RaspBMC to listen to Internet radio. If you use the analog audio connector you don't have to keep your TV on while the Raspberry Pi streams Internet radio.

This analog audio cable is compatible with the Raspberry Pi Model B and the Raspberry Pi Model B+:

3.5mm to RCA Stereo 1.8m Black
  • Connector Type A: 3.5mm Stereo Jack Plug
  • Connector Type B: Phono (RCA) Plug, x 2
  • Jacket Colour: Black
  • Cable Length: 1.8m
  • No. of Poles: 3
